In the past, catastrophic climate change was the stuff of science fiction – a threatening, but still distant perspective. Today, it has become much more palpable, and is now the subject of heated discussion. With so much talk about climate change, it is important to find new ways of speaking to your audiences. You could conduct a class, post a video, speak at a rally, write an article… why not make a video game?

Video games used to be considered just a form of entertainment. Today they have been recognized as a vital form of artistic expression, capable of presenting weighty subjects as well as fleeting emotions. Making games is no longer limited to a group of qualified professionals – there are a lot of easy-to-learn game creation tools which allow everyone to share their thoughts and feelings through the medium. One of the simplest and most elegant ones is Bitsy. It allows to create small pixelated narratives, and its minimalist aesthetics can be compared to that of a haiku poem –holding a wealth of meaning in a tiny form.

Requirements:
Intended audience: educators, activists or artists looking for new ways of talking about climate change – without prior experience in making games.
Required equipment: any computer with an Internet browser

Duration: 2 hours
