Join an event dedicated to The Internet of Everything. Both a film and a TV series, this project explores the cultural and social implications of our networked and interconnected future. Is the Internet of things a dream or a potential nightmare?
During the evening, we will present two episodes of the series. Director Brett Gaylor, joining from Canada, will introduce his project and give a talk on the role of media makers in shaping uplifting new narratives about digital culture that will lead to futures we can look forward to.
The innovation and digital-economy specialist, Jan Zygmuntowski, will then join in live from a Warsaw studio to open the discussion. How can disillusionment with techno-optimism be overcome to envision a digital culture that fosters a different kind of social contract, which is probably more utopian, yet still achievable?
After the discussion, the 52-minute film will be available online for 48 hours at Ninateka, from October 18, 9.00 pm to October 20, 8.59 pm.
Brett Gaylor
Brett Gaylor’s brain is split between making technology and documentaries.
For 10 years, he was part of the Mozilla Foundation’s senior management team. During this time he also produced media work documenting the Internet’s slide from democratic wonderland to dystopic surveillance market. Do Not Track, his 6 part interactive documentary about privacy and the web economy, was the recipient of the International Documentary Association award for best nonfiction series, the Prix Gemaux for Best Interactive Series, the International Association of Broadcasters Online Factual Prize, the Deutscher Prize for online communications, the 2015 Sheffield Documentary Festival jury commendation and the 2016 Peabody award. OK Google animated a year of his son Rowan’s accidental voice searches and received the 2019 Webby Award. His 2008 feature Rip! A Remix Manifestowas the recipient of audience choice prizes at festivals from Amsterdam to South Africa, broadcast in 20 countries, and seen by millions of people worldwide on Netflix, Huluand The Pirate Bay.
Anna Desponds
Responsible for curating the digital storytelling and immersive media programme at the Digital Cultures conference. She co-hosts "the Odbiornik” podcast for dwutygodnik.com magazine, covering art, technology, and the art of living with technology. For over a decade, she has been designing and organising international events to bring together audiovisual and digital media creators and enthusiasts. She provides consultations and devises strategies on interactive projects for Polish and foreign institutions.
Co-founder of the Total Immersion Foundation, she received a scholarship from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, and currently has a residency on the ArtHouse programme. As a child, she wanted to be an anthropologist and her dream came true. She is based between Warsaw, Sokołowsko, and Berlin, where she works for the Creatives’ Catalysts agency.
Jan Zygmuntowski
Economist studying the fields of development, economic systems, innovation theory and digital economy.
Chairman of the board at Instrat thinktank, where he also leads the digital economy research programme, and lecturer at Kozminski University. His previous experience includes work at the Polish Development Fund, among others. He advises and supports tech projects with a positive social impact. Graduate of SGH Warsaw School of Economics, G20 Global Solutions Fellow, British Council and Møller Institute FLC Fellow. Author of "Kapitalizm sieci" (Network capitalism).
